    Quilt for Democracy Challenge

From June through August, our LAMQG Challenge will be contributing to The Quilt for Democracy.

An excellent way to begin this challenge is to participate in Lorraine Woodruff-Long’s Workshop Express Yourself! Creating Text for Quilt and Fiber Projects (June 13th, 10am-4pm). More details about this workshop are below. Sign up today!

Quilt blocks should be cut to 13” x 13” which allows for a ½” seam allowance.

When sewn using the ½” seam allowance, the actual finished block reflecting our image/message will then be 12” x 12”.

This 12” x 12” area will reflect your design and message.

Participants will learn how to plan, trace, and cut detailed letters using standard alphabet templates and fusible paper backing on fabric. Sunday, June 14, 10am - 4 pm, Santa Monica Joslyn Park Auditorium

    Hawaiian Inspired Applique

Learn how to make the Big Island Blossom or Island Bloom mini quilt, both designed by Sheri. These quilts are a modern interpretation of traditional Hawaiian quilts which Sheri admired while on vacation. Students will learn how to prepare the applique (including folding, cutting, and basting) and how to apply the motif using needle-turn applique techniques. Class includes a brief introduction to traditional Hawaiian quilts, best practices, step-by-step instructions, and quilting tips. Sewing machines are not required for this workshop. This is a fun, relaxing slow-stitching workshop.

Event Types

Social Sews

Members are invited to attend our weekend sews, the Friday night Friday Sip & Sew and the Saturday afternoon Saturday Sew. This is one of the best ways to get connected and make new friends in the guild. Drop in and catch up with fellow quilt members while we sew from home on Zoom. Get your questions answered, make some new connections, show off your skills!

We have one link for all days. Meeting link will arrive in your inbox a day or two in advance.

Monthly Meetings

Currently, our meetings are hybrid. We meet in person at various locations around LA and members can join virtually via Zoom when they can’t come in person. Members receive Zoom links via the member newsletter.

Our meetings often include guest speakers, demonstrations, and everyone’s favorite: member show & tell. We encourage you to come visit - we always welcome new members! Please reach out to membership@lamqg.org to arrange a visit to one of our meetings!

Workshops

Workshop are paid events, usually from well-known, outside artists, where we learn about a specific skill or technique. Workshops are usually members-only but sometimes are open to non-members where space allows. If you are not a member but see a workshop you are interested in, contact programs@lamqg.org to inquire about availability.

Retreats

Retreats are destination focused, multi-day events where we get away and devote our time to sewing and fellowship. We offer 2 retreats each year: the Sleep in your Bed Retreat that is held in Ranchos Palos Verdes and the November Retreat in Temecula.
