As the world faces the COVID-19 pandemic, US medical professionals and other essential workers are facing a shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) including basic face masks.
While homemade masks should never be used in place of PPE, medical professionals across the country are using them to extend the life of their N95 masks.
Last week, Tracy, a representative from Assisted Home Health & Hospice, reached out to the LAMQG Board and asked if we could help. She wrote, “Our nurses are in desperate need of masks, as they are our first line defenders during this crisis.” They are looking for a total of 770 masks- 2 for each nurse on staff in facilities in Santa Barbara County, Ventura County, LA County and Maricopa County, AZ.
We’d like to invite guild members to participate in making masks for Assisted Home Health & Hospice. They have requested masks made from this pattern created by a nurse, for nurses. They can also accept the modified version our friends at Riley Blake Designs made to the original pattern here. Riley Blake put together a video tutorial of their modified pattern that may be helpful:
Send your masks to Assisted Home Health & Hospice, Attn: Tracy Sunshine, 72 Moody Court, Suite 100, Thousand Oaks, CA 91360. If you are unable to mail them on your own, reach out to the LAMQG board and let us know- we can help!
We’d like to ask anyone participating in this effort for Assisted Home Health & Hospice or any other medical organization to let the LAMQG board know how many masks you’ve made & sent off- we’d like to share our efforts with members and others as part of our community building initiative. Email us or tag us on Instagram (@lamqg) using the hashtag #lamqgmasksforheroes and keep us in the loop!
One final note from Tracy: “All of our first responders and those who continue to manage patients during this pandemic thank you in advance for your genuine acts of kindness, love and support.”
UPDATE 4/9/20: We have received a list of other local Los Angeles organizations also requesting masks. Check out the list here.
Additionally, if you have PPE that you are able to donate in the LA area, this form will connect you with the Mask Crusaders and the people who need them!
